Sydney is probably Australia’s most well known city. It is home to the world famous Sydney Opera House and Bondi Beach. It is very easy to get around the downtown core and definitely walk able. Bondi Beach
Bondi Beach is one of Australia’s most famous beaches. It is about a kilometre long and usually very busy. Full of surfers, sunbathers and those who want to be part of the scene, the beach is the ideal place in Sydney to spend a day (or more) in the sun. Bondi Beach is more than just a beach though, it is a bustling town with trendy cafes, fashionable boutiques and happening bars. Manly Beach
Manly Beach is on the opposite end of Sydney from Bondi Beach and is easily accessible by ferry from Circular Quay. There are a number of different activities in Manly from cultural to outdoor. There is the popular Oceanworld which houses Australia’s largest collection of marine life including Sydney’s largest sharks. There are numerous aquatic sports on offer around Manly – surfing, diving, parasailing, and fishing are just a few. Manly also has several nature trails and coastal walks in the area. Manly Beach is more laid back than Bondi Beach and you’ll find a greater mix of people here – young and old, poor and wealthy.
Kings Cross
Kings Cross is Sydney’s red light district. It is a mecca for backpackers from around the world. It has some of the best nightspots in Sydney and is a thriving adult entertainment district. In addition to the sleaze, there are several trendy cafes and bars which have recently opened up and are transforming this part of the city into a vibrant and trendy area. Be careful in Kings Cross at night when the action starts – crime has been known to show its face here, especially to unsuspecting travelers. Don’t let this discourage you to visit Kings Cross as it is definitely worth a look around.
The Rocks
The Rocks is where the first Europeans settled in Sydney in 1788 and is one of the oldest parts of the city. It’s now a largely residential area with three storey townhouses. The Rocks is a great place to take a slow wander round and browse the quaint shops and sit in a café. There are walking tours available around The Rocks which will take visitors to the oldest areas and explain the history. There are several art galleries on the rise in the area with local and national art.
Darling Harbour
Darling Harbour is located on the waterfront west of the city. There are many attractions in the harbour: Chinese Garden of Friendship, Australian Maritime Museum, Sydney Art Gallery and many more. Paddy’s Markets and the Sydney Fish Market are also close by and excellent venues to wander around.
Royal Botanic Gardens
The Royal Botanic Gardens are absolutely beautiful. They are the perfect escape from the noise and bustle of the city without really leaving the city. They are located on the eastern edge of the city just a short walk from the Sydney Opera House. Take a picnic, go for a jog or just take in the breathtaking beauty.
Paddington and Oxford Street
Paddington is a largely residential area full of pretty Victorian townhouses. There are a number of small designer boutiques housed in some of the townhouses which make a stroll around the neighbourhood worthwhile. The trendy Oxford Street runs through Paddington. This strip is teeming with all kinds of clothing stores and cafes and is the best place to do some serious retail therapy.
