The flagship project for the gallery is the Asia-pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art, a series of exhibitions on the international and national art calendar. With the exception of some Cinematheque programs and special exhibitions, admission to the gallery is free. It was opened in 1985 by Sir Henry Wylie Norman, then-governor of Queensland.
