Perth Mint
Founded in 1899, the Perth branch of Britain's Royal Mint is a top tourist destination in Western Australia. At the time it was founded, Australia was part of the British Empire, who were in charge of suppling gold sovereigns and half sovereigns to their colonies. Instead of shipping the gold to London, minting the coins there and then shipping the coins back to the colony, Britain decided to set up branch mints throughout the empire in places where gold had been found, which is how The Perth Mint came into existence. The Mint stopped making sovereigns in 1931, and remained under British control until 1970, when ownership passed to the Western Australian Government. The Perth Mint is now the eleventh largest gold exporter in Western Australia. When you come to visit the Perth Mint, you can take a guided tour, see the world's largest gold bar exhibition, the historic Perth Mint Coin exhibition, Australia's largest natural nugget collection or take in the incredible experience of watching a traditional gold pour, where gold is superheated to very high temperatures and then turned into a solid gold bar.
