National Gallery of Victoria (NGV)

Containing some of the biggest names in international art, the National Gallery of Victoria is a terrific place to educate yourself while in Melbourne, and the best thing is that admission is free.  This is the largest and oldest public art gallery in Australia, being formed in 1861.  With pieces by Peter Paul Rubens, Rembrandt, Gian Lorenzo Bernini, Tintoretto and many others in it's International Collection, NGV also boasts an impressive Modern Collection and has the mot comprehensive range of artworks in Australia. In 2011, they celebrated their 150 year anniversary with a gift of 173 Indigenous works of art from the Felton Bequest and held several huge community events to celebrate the impressive milestone.  In 2003, a new space called NGV:The Ian Potter Centre was opened and houses the collection of Australian art in Federation Square.
