Melbourne Attractions and Districts
Melbourne is located on the south east coast of Australia at the top of Port Phillip Bay and is the perfect starting point for traveling around Australia. You can travel north to Sydney, west to Adelaide, or south to Tasmania. Melbourne is also a great place to base yourself for day trips around parts of Victoria.
There is so much to do and see in Melbourne throughout the year. You will never be bored in Melbourne. There are several different areas of interest – each with its own distinct personality.
St. Kilda
St. Kilda is situated right on the water at the top of the bay. It is home to flashy bars, delicious restaurants and funky cafes. St. Kilda is where the young go to play, day and night. Start your day in Albert Park exploring the lush greenery, catch a cricket match or play a game of Frisbee. Then head down Fitzroy Street and duck into interesting shops and little cafes. Keep walking until you hit the Esplanade and take a stroll along the beach past the St Kilda Sea Baths and towards Luna Park. Once you hit Luna Park, keep walking to Acland Street and gaze at the mouth watering cakes in the window of one of several cake shops.
Carlton
Carlton is the labeled as the Italian district of Melbourne and is only a short tram ride away from the city centre. Travelers to this area are delighted to find themselves in a very European atmosphere. Sidewalk cafes abound along with quaint Italian bistros and waiters beckoning passersby into their restaurants. Lygon Street is the main drag here and is lined with fashionable clothing boutiques and cozy bookstores. Be sure not to miss the Lygon Street Festival in October.
Fitzroy
Fitzroy is the Bohemian hub of Melbourne. It is situated just north of the city and, as Carlton, is only a short tram ride away. Visitors to Fitzroy will delight in the cozy cafes, funky bars, and eclectic and vintage clothing stores. Fitzroy comes to live at night and is buzzing with activity. There are jazz bars, punk shows, tapas bars, and Latin dancing amongst other fun venues. Brunswick Street is the busiest street in this district but don’t forget to wander off the main thorough fare and go exploring down the side streets where gems can be found.
The City
The CBD of Melbourne is an unavoidable destination for travelers to Melbourne. Federation Square on Swanson Street and across from Flinders Street Station, the main train station, is where travelers converge and is the centre of Melbourne. Huge events are staged here such as Melbourne Fashion Week, Melbourne International Jazz Festival, Australia Day Celebrations and many more. Walking up Swanson Street will lead travelers to all major retailers, bars and restaurants in Melbourne. Myers and David Jones are both accessible from this street. Swanson Street is also the best place to hop on a tram to another destination.
South Yarra
South Yarra is the most fashionable district in Melbourne. Chapel Street is where travelers will find all the upscale boutiques and trendy bars and restaurants. Do not venture down this street in your runners or ratty jeans! And don’t forget your credit card! Greville Street just off of Chapel Street is not to be missed. This is where you’ll find smaller boutiques and one of a kind shops. It is always bustling. South Yarra is where you’ll also find the Prahan Market. In no way does it compare to the Queen Victoria Market in the city but it is a nice place to wander around and grap a latte on a weekend morning.
