Australia Tourist Attractions

Fremantle Prision, Perth

One of the most culturally significant and interesting places to visit in Perth is Fremantle Prison, which dates back to the early settlements of Western Australia (WA).  It is both the most intact convict establishment and the largest convict structure in WA.  In July 2010, Fremantle Prison took it's place on the World Heritage list as well as ten other Convict Sites in Australia. The sure is also listed with the Heritage Council of Western Australia's Register of Heritage Places, in the Fremantle West End conservation area and on the Australian Heritage Commission's Register of the National Estate. A maximum security jail until 1991, Fremantle was used as a place of incarceration continuously for close to 140 years. After opening to the public in 1992, Fremantle has become a very popular tourist destination and entry to the Gatehouse is free. The highlight of a visit to this historical structure is a guided tour, led by experienced guides who tell the rich and varied stories, including that of the Fremantle Ghost, that the buildings have seen over the decades.
