About Brisbane

Brisbane is the third largest city in Australia and the capital of the state of Queensland and is named for the river that it sits on, which was in turn named for Sir Thomas Brisbane, a Scotsman who was the Governor of New South Wales from 1821 to 1825. Located in a low-lying floodplain, Brisbane has suffered from three major floods, the last of which occurred in January 2011. The weather is Brisbane is categorized by hot and humid summers and warm, dry winters and has a humid subtropical climate. Brisbane is home to a growing live music scene, and also holds several festivals throughout the year.

Brisbane History

Originally inhabited by the Turball and Jagera people, the Brisbane area was first explored in 1799 by Matthew Flinders and the colony was created as a northern penal settlement in 1824 and was further inhabited by non-convict Europeans beginning in 1838. During WWII, Brisbane served as the South West Pacific headquarters for part of the war. Brisbane has also been the host to some large athletic events, including the 1982 Commonwealth Games and in 1988, held the World Expo.
