Barracks Arch, Perth

One of Perth's historic landmark buildings, Barracks Arch is located at the end of St Georges Terrace, down the road from the Parliament Buildings. It looks a bit like a jigsaw puzzle piece that has been misplaced, and used to be part of a much grander structure called the Pensioner's Barracks, which was build in 1863 to house the Pensioner's Guard. The Pensioner's Guard where in charge of keeping the nearly 10,000 convicts shipped to Perth in order. Although the last guard left the Pensioner's Barracks in 1904, it was not until 1966 that the wings of the Barracks where demolished to make way for a freeway. There was a public outcry about the destruction of such an important historic monument, and the lone arch stands today as an important glimpse into Perth's convict heritage.
