Adelaide Zoo

The second oldest zoo in Australia, Adelaide Zoo is the only metropolitan zoo in all of Australia that is a non-profit. There are over 1800 animals at the zoo, with approximately 300 exotic and native species. The newest structures at Adelaide Zoo is the second phase of the exhibit about South-East Asia, which is know as Immersion, with makes it seem as if Orangutans and Sumatran Tigers are almost within reach. Several features of the zoo are heritage listed on the National Trust of South Australia, as they are of architectural importance, such as the former Elephant House and the front entrance on Frome Road.

There is a botanical garden at the zoo which features a Moreton Bay Fig that was planted in 1877 as well as other flora. Adelaide Zoo sprawls over 16 acres and was first opened in 1883, and was founded by the South Australian Acclimatisation and Zoological Society.  Today the focus is on various species from the Gondwana 'supercontinent' made up of Australia, Asia, Africa, India and South America.  There are many botanic features that are similar between the continents which are on display on the zoo.
